G.H. Mumm Brut Millésimé 2002

Cuvee: Brut Nature
Vintage: 2002

While Non-Vintage Champagne is the expression of the house style, Vintage champagne is the expression of the growing conditions during the vintage and 100% of the grapes must come from the specified year. A vintage will only be declared in good years when the grapes are exceptionally balanced and complex.

2002 was a mild and warm year. Winter was mild overall with little frost, a temperate spring with a single night of frost (which destroyed 140 hectares of vines), a hot summer with only two periods of precipitation and a dry and sunny autumn. These conditions produced healthy grapes that were both extremely ripe, concentrated and remarkably balanced. The wine was bottled in 2003 and aged for almost five years in the deep chalk cellars below the house in Reims. After disgorgement the Champagne received a dosage of 6g/litre.  The Pinot Noirs, with dominant red berry notes, displayed wonderful balance and structure with great ageing potential, which will allow the 2002 to mature gracefully for at least a decade.

The Blend

The blend comprises: 68% Pinot Noir with eight crus: Aÿ, Avenay, Dizy, Bouzy, Verzenay, Verzy, Mailly, Ambonnay – and 32% Chardonnay with four crus: Avize, Cramant, Trépail and Auger

In line with house style, it is the full-bodied Pinot Noir that dominates the blend (68%) with Chardonnay (32%) adding elegance and freshness.

In the 2002 cuvée the Pinot Noir villages of the Montagne de Reims (42.5%) dominate with the freshness of Verzenay combined with the delicacy of Mailly balancing the power of Bouzy, mellowed by the rounder crus of Ambonnay and Verzy. The final blend contained a relatively high proportion (25.5%) of Pinot Noirs from the Marne Valley crus of Aÿ, Avenay and Dizy. The Chardonnay accounts for 32% of the blend with typically brioche scented wines from the village of Avize and citrus notes from Cramant.
