Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1999

Cuvee: Blanc de Blancs
Vintage: 1999

The most accomplished expression of the House’s style and the quintessence of its Champagne art, the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, whose first vintage dates back to 1952, is always vintaged and is composed entirely of white Chardonnay grapes from the prestigious Côte des Blancs villages (Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus and Bergères-les-Vertus).

Only the ‘cuvée’ or first pressing, an absolute gauge of finesse, is used. Five percent of wines that make the blend are aged in new oak barrels. These factors are some of the most rigourous in Champagne and for this reason many winegrowers in the Côte des Blancs consider the Comtes de Champagne as the jewel in the region’s crown.

Vintage 1999

The grape harvest began in sunshine and continued under persistent rain. The alcohol-acidity combination is very original and the wines of 1999 vintage are clear, pure and mature. The Chardonnays have the floral characteristics of great vintages and the Pinots Noirs, not only fine but also robust, release berry flavours.

The 1999 vintage could be compared to the 1982 or 1988 vintages. The year 1999 was notable for its higher than average annual temperatures.

The winter was rather mild and the following spring started off very warm and then became rainy. Thanks to favourable weather conditions, flowering began around mid-June. The exceptionally sunny weather at the end of August, which followed a hot, dry summer, provided the necessary conditions for a perfect ripening.

Tasting Notes

The colour is a pale straw yellow. The bubbles are exceptionally fine and abundant and form a delicate necklace of mousse.

The nose, very fine and ethereal, isreminiscent of a mixture of flinty aromas and toast, followed by fine and light essences of wood echoed by delicate notes of brioche and vanilla.

The first impression on the palate is fresh and smooth, followed by a refined mid-palate with dominant mellow, creamy, fruity flavours of pink grapefruit and white peach. The long, rich finish is balanced and harmonious.

Food Pairing

This celebratory and ceremonial wine is also a perfect accompaniment for first courses (sea-food and shellfish).

Combining delicacy and generous fruitiness with freshness and harmony, Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1999 shows all its long ageing potential.
