G.H. Mumm Cuvée R. Lalou 1998

Cuvee: Prestige Cuvée
Vintage: 1998

Cuvée R. Lalou completes the G.H. Mumm range, which lacked a prestige cuvée when Cuvée René Lalou ceased production in the mid 80s. This wine pays tribute both to the original cuvée and to the man who was the inspiration behind it: René Lalou, chairman of the House from 1939 until his death in 1973.  Visionary Lalou was one of the first to understand the true importance of ‘terroir’ within the context of Champagne and was instrumental in restoring the company’s exceptional vineyard holdings that had been ravaged first by phylloxera at the turn of the century, then by war.

The Blend

Cuvée R. Lalou is produced in very small quantities, and only in the best years.  It is a vintage blend of grapes sourced from up to twelve of the very best parcels, ‘Lieux Dits’, within the G.H. Mumm vineyards. These are situated within the Grand Cru villages of Verzy, Verzenay, Bouzy, Mailly-Champagne, Aÿ, Ambonnay, Avize and Cramant.  For each vintage the cellar master Didier Mariotti will only select those ‘Lieux Dits’ that he considers to have produced the most outstanding grapes.

For the 1998, only seven ‘Lieux Dits’ were used. The blend is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir which is aged on the lees for eight years before disgorging.  The dosage liquor is 50% Cramant Chardonnay 2002 and 50% Bouzy Pinot Noir 2002, and is aged for six to nine months in new oak. This oak-ageing of the dosage liquor represents the first time that G.H. Mumm has used oak in over 30 years.

Tasting Notes

Fresh citrus and mineral aromas, the hallmark of Les Bionnes and La Croix de Cramant, moves into notes of yellow and dried fruit; nougat; acacia honey (traces of Les Crupots and Les Rochelles); almonds and hazelnuts; candied orange peel; mineral flavours (chalk) and brioche with a hint of vanilla. Immense finesse and balance on the palate, despite the complex and generous character. Palate is perfectly poised with a powerful, complex finish and remarkable length.

Food Pairing

Mumm Cuvée R.Lalou is an extremely rich and powerful wine requiring complex dishes. This Champagne should be treated like a fine white Burgundy and accordingly will be perfect with white truffles, meaty fish (turbot) in sauce, poultry (Bresse chicken) and some game (partridge or grouse).
