Ecuador And Chile Recognize Champagne Appellation Of Origin
In January 2015, the Ecuador Intellectual Property Institute recognised Champagne as an appellation of foreign origin, following a request filed by the Comité Champagne in 2012.
Likewise, from 1st February 2015, in Chile the “Champagne” designation can only be used to indicate sparkling wines awarded the Champagne Protected Designation of Origin.
These recognitions are the result of an ongoing series of initiatives undertaken by the Comité Champagne (CIVC – the industry’s umbrella organisation) in South America to enhance protection of the Champagne appellation in the continent.
Registering the Champagne appellation gives the Comité Champagne the power to take action against misuse of the Champagne name.
Market checks will be performed by the Comité Champagne in the coming months to ensure compliance with this agreement.
